Position Overview:
This hybrid role reports to the Director of Scoring for 80% of the time, focusing on Scoring Tech duties, and to the Regional Clinical Manager (RCM) for 20% of the time, handling MSLT tech responsibilities.

Polysomnographic Scoring Technologist works under the general supervision of the Scoring Manager and Medical Director (or their designee) to evaluate and treat sleep disorders, including in-center and home sleep apnea testing, diagnostic interventions, and comprehensive patient care. This role involves accurately scoring sleep studies, analyzing physiological data, and adhering to industry standards and protocols to assist in diagnosing and treating sleep disorders. Expertise in polysomnography, sleep staging, and event scoring is essential.

Under the supervision of the Regional Clinical Manager and Medical Director or designee, the MSLT Technologist performs adult and pediatric sleep studies. Responsibilities include guiding trainees and technicians, explaining testing procedures, applying recording electrodes, and troubleshooting equipment to maintain quality data. The technologist will also provide appropriate therapies and training for new hires per Persante’s guidelines and accrediting agency standards.

Primary Scoring Duties (80%):

  • Perform scoring of sleep studies under the supervision of the Scoring Manager and Medical Director (or designee).
  • Accurately score sleep studies based on the most current AASM Scoring Manual.
  • Analyze data from various monitoring devices (EEG, EOG, EMG, ECG, respiratory signals, and oximetry) to identify sleep stages, respiratory events, and other abnormalities.
  • Interpret sleep architecture, including sleep staging, arousal frequency, sleep efficiency, and REM latency.
  • Maintain precise documentation of scoring results and patient information in electronic medical records (EMR).
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards, quality assurance protocols, and troubleshoot equipment issues as necessary.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and departmental meetings to enhance patient care and workflow efficiency.
  • Complete scoring within 24 hours of receiving the full sleep study, barring any technical or data entry issues.
  • Adapt to evolving workflows and maintain proficiency in scoring platforms.
  • Provide training for new scorers and adhere to all policies and procedures.

Secondary MSLT Duties (20%):

  • Maintain professionalism when interacting with patients and staff in a healthcare environment.
  • Confirm patient orders, resolve discrepancies, and ensure proper study performance.
  • Manage equipment and maintain a clean and safe working environment.
  • Ensure patient safety by providing necessary therapies, such as oxygen and positive airway pressure, and by addressing any potential interference with sleep.
  • Complete post-study administrative duties, including questionnaires, logs, patient satisfaction assessments, and communication of study findings.
  • Distribute and manage HSAT devices, providing education and validating data.
  • Ensure compliance with infection control policies, respond to communications promptly, and meet all health and safety requirements.

AASM Standards of Practice:

  • All scorers must comply with AASM Facility Standards and maintain proper credentials (RPSGT, CPSGT, or equivalent).
  • Scorers must participate in an AASM-compliant Interscorer Reliability Program and score each epoch of PSG data according to the AASM Scoring Manual.

Qualifications:

  • Credentials as a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT) in good standing with the Board of Registered Polysomnography Technologists.
  • Valid Sleep or Respiratory Therapy licensure in applicable states.
  • Experience in scoring both in-lab and home sleep studies, with thorough knowledge of AASM rules and regulations.
  • CPR/BLS certification required.
  • 30 CEUs within a 36-month rolling period.

  • Knowledge of HIPAA, privacy policies, and adherence to sleep center policies and procedures.
